The player deliberately lays their clubs down on the opposite side of the hole so that if their putt is struck too firmly it will stop the ball. The player makes the stroke and the ball stops short and does not hit the clubs.

The player has their caddie attend the flagstick from the hole and makes the stroke. After realizing they have struck it too firmly they tell the caddie to leave flagstick in the hole to try to stop the ball and the caddie does so. The ball misses the hole and never hits the flagstick.

The player has their caddie leave the flagstick in the hole and makes the stroke. Watching the ball roll toward the hole the player thinks the flagstick is leaning and asks the caddie to remove it from the hole so it won't prevent the ball from going in the hole and the caddie does so. The ball stops short of the hole.

The player makes a stroke near the putting green that comes to rest short of the crest of a slope. Unaware the ball has started rolling back toward them, the player repairs the divot they made. The ball then rolls over the repaired divot.
